Te Marautanga o Aotearoa
Te Marautanga o Aotearoa is founded on Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This is expressed through the vision: Kia tū tangata te ākonga - Students achieve their full potential.
The overarching goal for Te Marautanga o Aotearoa is developing successful learners to be competent and confident communicators in the Māori world, healthy in mind, body and spirit and secure in their identity and sense of belonging. Te Marautanga o Aotearoa aims to prepare students for the 21st century by helping them to become life-long learners, to be proud to be Māori while participating in national and global communities, and aspiring to unlimited potential.
In Māori Immersion kura, and immersion and bilingual units, Accent Learning’s focus is using Te Marautanga o Aotearoa to raise student achievement and te reo Māori learning to equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to be successful throughout their schooling and as citizens.
Support is given to kura and immersion and bilingual units to develop a school-based curriculum to give effect to Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and to identify the needs and aspirations of their community to assist the design of their school-based curriculum.
Access to quality Māori language education will help to validate culture and affirm identity, with the potential for a flow-on effect to achievement – as a consequence of students being firmly grounded in their roots, with positive self-esteem and self-belief.
In addition, Māori students’ facility in te reo Māori will help to prepare them for learning other languages — with the associated benefits that ensue from second language learning in terms of mental dexterity and cross-cultural understanding.
