Secondary Literacy Project
This nationwide project aims to improve student achievement across all learning areas in, and through, reading and writing. The focus is on Years 9 and 10 students at risk of not reaching their academic potential, particularly Māori and Pasifika students. Schools receive ongoing funding and professional development support over two years.
A literacy leader in each school is supported by an Accent Learning literacy facilitator to develop the skills and knowledge needed to gradually lead and build in-school capacity in effective inquiry-based literacy teaching. Involvement begins with a detailed needs analysis at the school to inform the focus for professional learning.
Teachers and school leaders involved in the project learn a range of ways to identify and address the literacy learning needs of their students, and to evaluate and improve their teaching in an ongoing cycle of inquiry and knowledge building.
In 2011 Accent Learning is offering all secondary schools in the Wellington region an opportunity to participate in an inquiry-based project within a professional learning cluster. Participants will develop an understanding of effective cross-curricular literacy practice based on the Secondary Literacy project, and enhance their knowledge of literacy in the NCEA context. The programme offered will include 4 one-day workshops throughout the year and ongoing contact with the facilitator.
The programme will cover three strands:
- Understanding literacy in the New Zealand Curriculum: Years 9-13
- Using inquiry to develop and sustain effective literacy practice across the curriculum
- Literacy and the NCEA context, including the new literacy unit standards
This programme has been developed to meet the needs of Literacy Leaders, Literacy team members, senior managers or middle leaders. The programme is open to all schools, regardless of previous literacy professional development experience. It is recommended that at least two participants per school participate in the programme. Participants need to attend all workshops.
Dates for workshops: March 22nd, May 26th, August 23rd, November 17th.
